What is Sedation?

Sedation is a technique to reduce your anxiety and keep you in a sleep-like-state during your dental treatment. It is not a general anaesthetic; you will not be unconscious. But you may fall asleep as you become more relaxed.

Sedation

Dental treatment without anxiety

Some people are so worried about visiting the dentist, they avoid attending regular appointments or getting vital treatment to protect the health of their teeth. This reluctance to see the dentist can be due to a variety of reasons including:

  • Concern about potential pain
  • Feeling out of control
  • Fear of being judged if their teeth are in poor condition
  • Bad childhood experiences
  • Strange sounds and smells
  • A needle phobia

If you have dental anxiety, IV sedation is a safe, effective way to make you feel completely relaxed and much more willing to undergo treatment. Your worries will be eliminated but you remain conscious and able to answer questions, so the dentist can treat you more effectively.

Relax and overcome dental anxiety with sedation

Dental sedation offers a comfortable solution for patients who experience anxiety or fear during dental procedures. Here’s why it might be the right choice for you:

Unwind and feel calm: Sedation puts you in a deeply relaxed state, easing anxiety and promoting a stress-free experience.
Fast-acting relief: The calming effects kick in quickly, allowing you to feel comfortable shortly after starting the sedation process.
Personalised care: The level of sedation can be adjusted to your specific needs, ensuring you receive the optimal level of relaxation.
Forget your worries: Sedation can help you forget the details of the treatment, making the experience even more pleasant.
Stay informed, stay in control: While relaxed, you’ll still be able to communicate with your dentist if needed.

Sedation

Post-sedation recovery tips: Rest up and relax!

Here’s what to expect after your sedation dentistry appointment:

  • Safe travels home: After your procedure, you’ll be discharged with an adult to ensure a safe journey home.
  • Take a break: Relax and rest for at least 2 hours after the sedation wears off.
  • Hold off on driving: Your reaction time may be affected, so wait until the following day before getting behind the wheel.
  • Safety first: Avoid operating potentially dangerous machinery, like power tools, for 24 hours.
  • Important decisions on hold: Hold off on making any significant decisions until you’re fully recovered, usually the next day.
  • Social media savvy: Be cautious with social media for 24 hours as your judgment might still be affected.
  • Memory lapses? No worries: It’s normal not to remember much of the procedure.
  • Bruising is common: You might develop a small bruise where the sedation was administered if you have IV sedation, but it should disappear within a few days.
  • Pain management: Take your prescribed pain medication exactly as directed for optimal comfort. Continue taking any other medications as instructed by us.
  • Diet do’s and don’ts: Follow our advice on resuming your normal diet. Avoid alcohol for at least 2 hours after the procedure.

By following these tips, you’ll ensure a smooth recovery and get back to your routine feeling refreshed. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sedation is used for dentistry?

Dentistry commonly employs various types of sedation depending on the procedure and the patient’s needs. These may include nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedatives (pills), intravenous (IV) sedation, or general anaesthesia. The choice of sedation method is usually determined by the complexity of the procedure and the patient’s anxiety level.

Are you completely asleep during sedation dentistry?

It depends on the type of sedation used. With some methods, like general anaesthesia, patients are completely unconscious and asleep. However, with other forms of sedation such as nitrous oxide or IV sedation, patients are typically conscious but in a deeply relaxed state. They may feel drowsy or even fall asleep, but they can usually be awakened easily.

What happens with sedation at the dentist?

During sedation dentistry, the patient is given medication to help them relax or sleep through their dental procedure. The level of sedation can vary from minimal (such as nitrous oxide) to moderate (such as oral sedatives) to deep (such as IV sedation). The dentist or anaesthesiologist closely monitors the patient’s vital signs throughout the procedure to ensure their safety.

Do you feel pain with dental sedation?

Dental sedation is specifically designed to minimise or eliminate pain and discomfort during dental procedures. Depending on the type and level of sedation used, patients may not feel any pain at all. Local anaesthesia is often used in conjunction with sedation to ensure complete comfort during the procedure. However, it’s essential to communicate any discomfort or sensations to the dentist or medical team so they can adjust the sedation or administer additional pain relief if necessary.
