Myths about dental implants

21-02-2017

Dental implants have certain myths associated with them. They have been in use since the late 1950s and have become a fairly standard cosmetic dental procedure. Despite this, there are many misconceptions about them. At the Ralston Dental and Cosmetic Clinic in Leicester, we aim to dispel these myths, using honest and professional advice from our dental professionals.

Dental implants are very painful

This is not true. All dental procedures are likely to entail some level of discomfort. Some people believe dental implants are painful as the jawbone is drilled into. In reality, the jawbone actually has very few nerve endings, so it’s less painful than having a filling. The dental implant procedure is carried out using a local anesthetic. If needed, over the counter painkillers should provide adequate pain relief, for a brief period after the procedure has been carried out.

You need a strong jawbone for dental implants

Strong bone structure is a definite plus as it will help the dental implant to remain strong and firmly set. However, if you have weaker bone structure, this does not necessarily exclude you from dental implants in Leicester, as a bone graft can be done beforehand. Whether this is appropriate for you will need to be determined by our implant dentists.

You can’t have them if you smoke

It is true that smokers will have a lower success rate for implants, because smoking increases the risk of infection and therefore rejection of the implant. This does not mean you cannot have dental implants in Leicester if you smoke. Cutting down or quitting for the duration of the treatment will increase the chances of success and our dentists can advise you on other ways you can care for your implants to help them stabilise.

You don’t need to brush dental implants

Although the crown itself is not a natural material, your gums still are and it is essential to keep them as clean and healthy as possible. A good quality, regular oral hygiene routine is fundamental to keeping your dental implants in Leicester in the best condition possible. Failure to do so could lead to infection and pain and even the possible loss of the implant.
