How dental implants can solve loose denture issues

13-09-2016

Dental implants provide the perfect solution to people struggling with loose dentures. At Ralston Dental and Cosmetic Clinic in Leicester, denture stabilisation is just one of many dental implant treatments on offer, designed to give you a second chance at a mouth of healthy and functional teeth.

With dental implants, a dentist can replace the root portions of lost natural teeth. This is important for two reasons: first, and most obviously, for ensuring that your new teeth stay secure and functional; and secondly, to help keep your jaw bone strong, dense, and healthy.

The jaw bone starts to resorb pretty quickly after you lose several teeth. As well as making traditional dentures loose and adding a further layer of complexity to dental implants treatments, this can also change the structure and appearance of your face, making you look old before your time.

At our Leicester dental practice we can use dental implants to prevent such issues. The problem of loose dentures is caused by a change in jaw bone density, rather than a change in the actual dentures, because they only replace the crown portions of your natural teeth, and don’t provide stimulation of the jaw bone.

Dental implants are titanium tooth roots, which are very compatible with the human body and form a very strong bond with the jaw bone, continuing to stimulate it when you bite and chew food. At our Leicester clinic we place dental implants under local anaesthetic in a minor surgical procedure. Many patients report this procedure as being a lot more bearable and comfortable than a tooth extraction.

It takes a few months for your dental implants to integrate with your jaw bone. Depending on the number of the teeth that are being replaced, your Leicester dentist may fit temporary teeth, or may adjust your existing denture so that you can continue to wear it during healing.

Once integration is complete, you will be called back to our Leicester dental practice to have your permanent new teeth fitted. These will look and function just like the real thing, and will last for many years with good care.
