Dental implants: an introduction to permanent replacements for missing teeth

05-07-2016

Dental implants are the only permanent way a dentist can replace missing teeth. Ralston Dental and Cosmetic Clinic in Leicester offers a number of implant-based solutions to tooth loss, carried out by highly experienced implant dentist Dr Duncan Ralston.

Any dentist will stress the importance of replacing missing teeth one way or another – failing to do so risks both your oral and general health as tasks that we take for granted, such as eating or speaking, can become much more difficult. At our Leicester clinic we believe dental implants are, more often than not, the ideal solution to tooth loss.

Unlike traditional dental bridgework or dentures, dental implants address the issue of missing tooth roots. When the roots of teeth are missing for a considerable period of time, the jaw bone can start to resorb, making dentures loose, causing a sagging of the skin around the jowls, lips, and face, even in some cases altering the entire appearance of your face.

Dental implants are bionic, titanium tooth roots. Titanium is osteoconductive, which means that it encourages bone growth. This means your implants will help to avoid the issues associated with bone loss as well as holding your crown, bridge, or denture securely in place with a similar strength to that of a natural tooth root.

We offer free implant consultations with our treatment co-ordinator at our Leicester dental practice, during which you can ask any questions you may have about dental implants, and learn more about both their advantages and what exactly is involved in implant treatment.

Leicester dental implants

We have been using the popular German Ankylos system of dental implants at our Leicester dental practice for the past 15 years, and have carried out numerous successful implant procedures.

Dental implants can be used to replace anything from one tooth to all your teeth. Depending on your clinical need and personal preference, your dentist can attach single crowns, an implant-retained bridge, or dentures to the abutments on top of your implants after a healing period.

Our Leicester clinic uses The Wand pain-free injection system for delivering local anaesthetic. Dental sedation is also an option.
