How dental implants work

Dental implants aren’t replacement teeth, but replacement tooth roots. They will be placed in direct contact with your jaw bone in a small operation, which is carried out under local anaesthetic delivered via The Wand pain-free injection system at our Leicester dental practice.

Once they are in position, a process called osseointegration begins. This involves the dental implants meshing with the jaw bone, and it takes approximately six months to complete. After this your dentist will attach your permanent new teeth – be they crowns, dentures, or an implant-retained bridge – to the abutments on top of your implants, restoring both aesthetic appeal and full functionality to your jaw.

Advantages compared with standard dentures and bridges

Standard dental bridgework and dentures only replace the crowns of lost teeth. When the roots are not replaced, the jaw bone is likely to resorb, which can make it harder to place dental implants in the future and can also result in changes to the structure of the face.

Bone loss causes dentures to become loose, which causes a wide range of problems. Traditional bridgework, meanwhile, relies on adjacent teeth for support and may involve the loss of healthy tooth structure.

Dental implants help to prevent bone loss, holding either a denture, a bridge, or a single crown in place, without any need for work to be done on surrounding teeth.
