Health from the root

14-02-2017

Health may show on the outside, but it comes from what is going on in the inside. Good habits such as eating healthily, having regular exercise and refraining from unhealthy activities such as heavy drinking and smoking will all show positively.

However, we all have vices and some of us feel we cannot turn back the clock and undo all the damage caused by our unhealthy habits. Smoking, eating sugary foods and not having a regular dental routine can cause teeth to become loose and even fallout, but it’s not always our fault. We can also lose teeth through hereditary conditions, gum disease or injury. Well, we have good news for you. It may not too late to fix this and achieve the dental health and winning smile you have always dreamed of, with dental implants in Leicester.

What are dental implants?

At our dental practice, the Ralston Dental and Cosmetic Clinic in Leicester, dental implants are one of our most popular procedures. Dental implants have been in regular practice for decades and are a proven, tried and tested method of replacing missing teeth.

Our dentists will make precision holes in your jawbone and implant small titanium screws, which act as a replacement for the lost root of your tooth. They fuse naturally into your jawbone, creating a strong root, which we are then able to attach replacement teeth or bridges to. The final result is a sturdy, reliable and long-lasting new tooth or set of teeth.

Will it hurt?

Although having implants may sound a little painful, it is a relatively straightforward treatment done under local anesthetic. There are two approaches to placing a dental implant. The one we use is a two-stage procedure where the titanium ‘root’ is placed on the first visit and then allowed to bond with the jawbone. This bonding is called the osseointegration period and can take around two to four months. The crown part of the replacement tooth is then placed during a second visit.

Once your dental implants in Leicester have been placed, they will provide a strong and realistic looking tooth that should last up to 30 years, providing a good oral hygiene regime is followed.
